We often ignore the engine specification not because we are not interested in knowing more about the engine but because we find it impossible to understand the technical and complicated words and phrases used in the specs. When you cannot understand the difference between a stroke and a bore, it becomes very difficult to perform a critical analysis of the features of the engine. Further, there is a huge difference between
car engine specifications and petrol engine specs. Read ahead for an explanation of some terms and phrases used in car engine specifications
Stroke
The stroke refers to the distances that the piston travels into the cylinder. The cylinder is the place where combination of fuel and air takes place. The piston goes in to compress the mixture of fuel and air and is pushed out at great speed when the combustion takes place. The stroke refers to the distance that the piston pushes into the cylinder. Greater the inward thrust, greater will be the outward thrust. If the piston goes in deep, then the compression will be higher and the engine will generate more power. The negative aspect of a deep stroke is that the piston will have to be very strong to withstand the impact of combustion.
Bore
The bore refers to the diameter of the cylinder. This is very important to determine the size and the car
engine specifications of the piston. The piston must travel in and out of the cylinder at high speeds without touching the metal surface. The efficiency of the engine is heavily dependent on the size of the cylinder and its diameter. Oil is used to ensure damage does not take place even if the piston does come in contact with the cylinder. Since oil plays a very important role in functioning of the engine, oil car engine specifications too must be followed and understood before buying the same.
Displacement
We all know that the engine consists of numerous cylinders. Now, let us forget all about the design of the engine and let us imagine it as a big metal bowl. How much liquid will this bowl contain? That is exactly what is called the displacement of an engine. This is measured in liters or cubic inches. That is to say, if all the cylinders of the engine are combined to form a bowl, what will be the volume of liquid that it will hold? Higher the number, higher the displacement and bigger will be the engine. The next time you come across a 350 car engine specifications, you should realize that the number refers to cubic centimeters i.e. the displacement of the engine.
Number and placement of cylinders
One big cylinder will generate a lot of vibration and jerks. On the other hand, numerous small cylinders will perform the same task with lesser vibrations and problems. These cylinders can be placed in a straight line or in the shape of a 'V'. The number of cylinders and the shape is often described in the engine specs. This will help you visualize how cylinders are placed and how the ancillary mechanism consisting of the camshaft, crankshaft, piston and valves will function.
